Developments in robotics and artificial intelligence are currently affecting a number of engineering industries. Dangerous and harsh environments are especially good areas to use robots, which are much better placed than humans to withstand extreme conditions. This event will explore the cutting edge engineering that goes into creating, operating and maintaining robots that can withstand extreme environments.
Ensuring that robots are reliable, safe and performing as required is a major challenge, especially for the harshest environments. At the same time, continuous technological improvements make robots ever more capable, resilient, robust and cost effective
This event will address applications of robotics across high hazard environments including nuclear, offshore, deep-sea, space and other challenging environments.
Topics to be covered include:
- Regulation and standards for robotics
- Communication difficulties in high hazard environments (e.g. due to thick concrete walls) that increase requirements for autonomy
- The need to inspect, grasp, manipulate and dismantle different objects and materials
- Exploration, mapping and modelling of unknown or partially known extreme environments
- Requirement for multiple sensing modalities, including radiological, chemical, high pressure, high corrosion and thermal
- Movement methods including: underwater vehicles, airborne vehicles, and ground-based vehicles
- Powerful, precise, multi-axis manipulators needed with complex sensor capabilities
- Need for robot supervision, from remote control to full autonomy
- Avoiding critically damaging effects of environment on electronic systems
- New technologies and developments in software, hardware and middleware
